Without doubt the best book I have found on the subject of working at home is "Freelancing - The First 30 Days" By William N. Coan and James K. Coan. It supplied me with the how-to's when I wanted to begin technical writing from home.

What a Great Book! The guy that wrote the last review can't be a real freelancer. Anyone in freelance work will greatly value from this title. Tells all about freelance work: where it came from, where it is, and most importantly where it's going. Very, very interesting progression of trends as they relate to freelance work in America today.

In addition to providing a fantastic overview of how to break into particular fields to work freelance, the book outlines the past history of freelance work dating back to the feudal age, and how it affects the state of high-technology freelance work in America today. For example, it explains that the Federal Highway Act closely parallels the effects of the development of the Internet in helping freelancers find work. Very insightful and useful information.

Personal profiles and success stories from freelancers throughout the country are detailed throughout the paperback, which includes informative ratings and descriptions of dozens of job-search websites. It was a fantastic read that has already helped me increase my freelance income by 25 percent with the tips on how to get freelance work over the Internet.

If you're a freelance worker, and want to find work over the web, this is the book with a plan.

This book was the best source I've found for searching jobs on the Internet. It gives a fascinating history of how job surfing has developed and where it's going and how I can use that history to anticipate the future for getting jobs online.
I'm getting my jobs now almost exclusively online, and I'm making more money and having more leisure time. It's great. This book is great.

I noticed the review below, and I really must disagree whole heartedly. The book was written in 2000, which probably makes some of the links outdated (I really doubt if the reader below actually followed them), but there's a ton of information in the title about how to freelance work online. Great sources for information, great ideas on how to get set up, and, more importantly, real life profiles from freelancers all over the world who are actually making it online. I've contacted some of them myself and have collaborated their stories in the book. So I know that the material is credible.
If you're looking for a book that will show you how to magically materialize freelance work, this book won't do it... nor will anything else. There's too many people out there who think that freelance working is the pannacea to getting rich. It's not and the book points that out). It does, however, give loads of valuable and worthwhile advice to freelancers who are thinking about taking the Information Highway to work. And, to a disabled person using the Internet to find valuable freelance work in order to make a living, it is a Godsend.

I read the "Save Your Money" review below, which was pointed out to me by a friend in my writers group, and I adamantely disagree. The reviewer says that the book is "essentially a list of 30 Job Search websites. WRONG! Obviously this reviewer, who didn't leave a name, did not read the title. The book begins with an articulate and obsorbing review of the history of freelance work dating back to Fuedal Age. It then provides a detailed and very compelling timeline on working online, and how doing so can be of value to the average working freelance worker. The applicability of freelance work is then expanded to include all freelance workers, not only writers and creatives.
The book then outlines specific technologies and tools that are available to today's freelance workers, and how these tools can be employed toward finding gainful work in the freelance markets. I, personally, have used several of these tools and techniques to successfully find freelance gigs, one that is keeping me busy almost full time. There is golden advice within the pages of this title.
The last few chapters of the book then reviews several websites that are available for freelancers to use in finding jobs. The sites are preedominantly freelance sites such as freelanceworkexchange.com, r144.com, and freelance.com. So, "A Reader's" assessment below that only 1 or 2 sites in this title are for freelancers is obsurd.
This title has developed an almost cult-like following amongst the members of many freelance websites. The author writes columns for two nationally acclaimed writers publications, and has personally responded to several of my email queries about how I can best pursue freelance work online. The wealth of information I received back from the author personally has been invaluable to my career.
I say this title is a must for anyone doing freelance work who wants to do it online using the Internet.

In this easy read, George Sorenson lays everything out on the table regarding selling freelancing services.
Telling us what to watch out for and how to overcome challenges, Sorenson is realistic by explaining that freelancers will be blindsided by problems despite their care and caution.
Sorenson is light on helpful tips when dealing with the government, as well as what freelancers may claim by copyright and what is proprietary information when dealing with companies.
This book is a must read for any beginner freelancer or person considering freelancing.

I first read this book several years ago and found that it provided a fresh look at careers for self-employed professionals in the creative field. It describes fields and specialties I never knew existed as well as some I had long considered entering myself. I found especially valuable the practical discussion of how to get past pschychological issues that stand in the way of self-employed individuals and sucess. I only wish I had taken the excellent advice in this book sooner.

A book that covers all the bases in getting yourself set up in business. It is written from an Australian perspective, which is very practical. There is a lot of detail, from understanding your motivation to start in business, to knowing how much to charge for your services, and how to market yourself and your business. Ian Benjamin has lots of anecdotes and real life stories, which makes the book even more interesting and useful.

A great guide if you are thinking of working for yourself.

Another "how to write" book I just finished was Write Where You Live - Successful Freelancing At Home Without Driving Yourself And Your Family Crazy by Elaine Fantle Shimberg. It's a useful and humorous book on how to be a freelance writer while also trying to preserve your sanity at home (assuming that's where you do your writing). Shimberg has been a freelance writer for over 40 years, and did much of that while trying to raise five kids. You have to give her major kudos for pulling that one off. She covers reasons for writing, how to structure your time, how to figure out what to write about, and much more. There are a number of funny stories and witty observations sprinkled throughout, and you can tell she likes what she does. There is also a fair amount of coverage on basic life issues, like organizational skills and believing in yourself. If you're looking to do freelance writing, this would be a good choice for a read on how to get started. The only criticism of the book I can make is that it was written in 1999 and computers are still looked on as an "option". I really don't think that's the case any more...
And my favorite quote she used in the book... by someone named Louis Untermeyer... "Write out of love, write out of instinct, write out of reason. But always for money."
I like the way that guy thinks! :-)
